Player of the Season Candidate: James McCarthy
The younger and Irish of our two James' has been a player that we have expected big things from since his arrival in 2010. Yet the midfielder has yet to spark into the explosive form that he had looked on the verge of in 2011 before Fabrice Muamba ended it witha crunching tackle.
Yet this season our midfielder has been an ever present in Martinez's midfield this year. And we wouldn't have had it any other way. His continual effort levels have always made the Latics faitfull appretiate him. And this season he has started to add that spark of vision and tactical thinking of a player we thought we had signed.
The only downside for McCarthy this season is that he hasn't scored. After numerous attempts and close shaves at goal. James couldn't score. A shame really has his season performances deserve a goal, and had he started scoring then we may not have had such a rough season.
Why Victor Moses is Set to Ruin his Career
Our young Nigerian winger is set to move away from the DW Stadium. That is according to the players agent (Tony Finnigan). Well that will be yet another nose dive of a player from Wigan Athletic. We have seen it happen time and time again over the past few years, where players have felt they are better than the club and moved to soon.
The likes of Pascal Chimbonda, Charles N'Zogbia, Lee Cattermole and Titus Bramble; all left the club saying they were going on to bigger and better things in their football career. Yet not a single one of them has improved upon the glimpses of talent they showed in their days at Wigan.
In the case of N'Zogbia it is early days, but even he could have gone somewhere bigger had he held on a season longer and then moved to a much bigger and better club. No offence to Aston Villa
Player of the Year Candidate: Gary Caldwell
So first up to have their season looked at, is our captain and the clubs winner of player of the season. As I type this, he is winning our vote. And really it is no surprise that a player who has become a fan favourite would win this year award. Gary Caldwell has had a mixed Wigan career so far, when we signed him in the January of 2010. Many people felt that he would come and revitalise our defence.
And he did do that for a time. Showing the characteristics that had made him Scotland's best center back. Strong in the tackle and always putting his body on the line. But after a hip operation last season he never really hit his best, but when he did it still wasn't at the level we expected.
Player of the Season
It’s that time of year again. Where after a very long and hard slog, we come down to saying what our best bits were, it gives that lighter tinge even on the darkest of seasons. So today and for the rest of this week, I am looking for you player of the season.
There have been many players this year that have stood out at parts from the season. From Ali Al Habsi in goal continually doing his best, to Gary Caldwell leading the line and taking the ethos of Martinez’s coaching onto the pitch.
So there are many that we can choose from, and I hope it isn’t an easy decision. The official fans perspective went to Gary Caldwell. But wonder if the (of course more prestigious award) of Pie Eaters Footie player of the season, will go to our captain. It’s your turn to choose, comment below if you want to add anyone else to the shortlist (also listed below).
Each day this week I am going to review one of the players season’s in depth and look at what makes them a worthy candidate and then release the winner next Monday. It’s that simple. So get voting.
Shortlist
Gary Caldwell
Ali Al Habsi
Congratulations to Franco Di Santo, who won Wigan's golden boot scoring 7 goals this season. Having scored three goals in the last five games.
Keep it up Fanco!
Wigan Athletic 3-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Well its been a long long season, and it came down to two teams playing each other for no more than pride. And that was what we saw today, on the pitch that was. Now right from the off I would like to condone what happened today. If you haven't already seen the pictures, the fans burst onto the pitch at the end of the game, and it appears there may have been an incident of violence.
I do not at all agree with what happened, the fans that went on the pitch after being told not to; was wrong, very wrong. But what is done is done; I would now rather talk about what was a very good and honest game, and showed why Wolves don’t really deserve to be going down. But the table doesn’t lie after 38 games.

End of Season Awards
The clubs official end of season awards were on Wednesday night. And I should have put the results up before then, but anyway.
In the end the Fan's player of the season award went to Captain Marvelous Gary Caldwell who deserved the award for his second half of the season as he drove the team onto survival.
Other notable awards, saw Maynor Figueroa scoop the players player of the year. Something he has deserve for a good few years. Our Honduras left back has been a great club servant and continues to be in his new central role.
Emmerson Boyce won the outsanding achievement award for surpassing Paul Scharner's Premier League appearance record for the club. Our second longest surving player is one who doesn't shine in the lime light much, but is a player you want on your team.
Shaun Maloney was rewarded for his fantastic goal against Manchester United getting the goal of the season. That game was also given performance of the year, being the first time the club had ever taken points of United.
Tim Chow took the Young Player of the Year prize, while Youth Team player Ryan Meadows won the respected Micheal Millett award.
Fan Brian Sabin received the Fan of the Year Award for continual loyal support of the club.
While Neill Rimmer, Matt Jackson, Gary Sloane and Kenny Williams won the community award for their cycle ride from Wigan to Norwich in aid of the Emma Hoolin appeal.
Congratulations to all, they were very much deserved!
