April's Player of the Month

Shaun Maloney of Wigan gets past Michael Carrick of Manchester United during the Barclays Premier League match between Wigan Athletic and Manchester United at DW Stadium.

Towards the end of each season, teams need players who are going to stand head and shoulders above the rest of their peers and say. Hey guys I'm going to carry us over the finish line, well Latics haven't fallen short their this season. There were at least four players who could so easily have won April's player of the month. But it goes to a man whose season started, just as ours got into life.

That players is of course Shaun Maloney. The ex-Scotland international (not for very much longer) has come into this team and shown them all how to play football and have quite literally taken control of anything happening in the midfield, it was that little bit of experience and know how that we have been missing this season.

Weekly Poll: Could we Lose Martinez

Newcastle United Manager Alan Pardew shakes hands with Wigan Athletic Manager Roberto Martinez (R) prior to the Barclays Premier League match between Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United at the DW Stadium.

Well it looks even more likely that clubs will be circulating over our manager this summer, not only are a host of foreign clubs reportedly interested in the Spaniard. But you can now add West Bromwich Albion to the list, although I very much doubt he would leave Wigan for them (no offence to West Brom).

Roberto Martinez came to this club as a legend from our not to distant past and he has established himself, as a true Latics legend not only as a player but now as a Manger. Leading us to victories against all of the 'big four', and rebuilding the club from the ground up.

Weekly Poll: Could we lose Martinez?

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez looks on ahead of the Barclays Premier League match between Fulham and Wigan Athletic at Craven Cottage.

A couple of months ago, the question was should we sack Roberto Martinez. But after five great wins, and two unlucky defeats to Chelsea and Fulham. Rumors are circulating that clubs are watching the young Spanish manager. Last time round I said we had to keep him and keep the faith, as he was doing a fantastic job at the club. The past few weeks have proven the on field promise of the current playing staff.

But its the young lads coming through that are also exciting. Lee Nicholls, Roman Golobart, Jordan Mustoe and Nouah Dicko just a few of the many young lads doing so well on loan, as Martinez has looked to harvest their potential. Thats not to mention how well he has brought the likes of Victor Moses, James McCarthy and James McArthur into the top league of English football.

The question is though, would he stay? I know he is committed now, but come the summer if another team comes calling will he be on his way out? Aston Villa could have a much different season had Roberto been in charge.

Its a case of hoping that we can keep the man, who looks like he is on course to keep us in the Premier League yet again.

Weekly Poll:Is the time right for Dave Whelan to step down?

Dave Whelan, Chairman of Wigan Athletic applauds the teams as they enter the pitch during the Barclays Premier League match between Stoke City and Wigan Athletic at Britannia Stadium.

You voted and you still want the man who has pulled us up out of the murky realms of administration, into the promised land of the Premier League, in the space of ten years. What an achievement, and what a man that has done it. Dave Whelan has only ever had the club and the fans at heart when making decisions about this club, and you can say whatever you want about him, but for me he is one of the best chairmen of all time.

And that looks set to continue as the club as not had any prospective buyers, not that we know of anyway. But if Whelan was to sell up, then the only way I could see that, was to a Wigan Athletic fan who would look after the club and his legacy.

Poll
Is the time right for Dave Whelan to step down?
Yes, if he can get a new owner in place

Weekly Poll: Is it the right time for Dave Whelan to step down?

Dave Whelan, Chairman of Wigan Athletic and manager Roberto Martinez celebrate after winning 1-0 to keep them in the Premiere League during the Barclays Premier League match between Stoke City and Wigan Athletic at Britannia Stadium.

There were many reports last week of Roberto Martinez leaving the club in the summer, no matter what happened come the end of the season. However circulating among those reports, was the fact that Dave Whelan himself is very close to stepping down and hanging up his cheque book.

The question is though, is there anyone to replace him?

It has always been well documented that Whelan has always looked to sell the club while we have been in the Premier League. More for the fact of getting fresh young blood into the club and a major cash injection. Whether the club have been close to deals or not, we will probably never no.

The other option which has been expressed is that the club will stay in the family, and that a younger Whelan will step into the fore front to take the helm of the club. That has been reported to be Whelan's grandson. But that really be the best for the club?

One thing that is for certain, is that Dave Whelan will be a big miss to Wigan Athletic and football when he finally decides to call it a day.

Weekly Poll: Could we bounce back into the Premier League

Manager Roberto Martinez of Wigan celebrates victory with his team after the Barclays Premier League match between Stoke City and Wigan Athletic at Britannia Stadium.

It was a close run thing, but it shows how unsure as a group of fans we are about how life outside the Premier League would be. My personal feeling is that we won't go out of the Premier League this season, and a strong summer will see us build into a mid-table side. At least that is the hope.

Yet if it went wrong many of you feel that we could claw our way back into the Premier League and once again live within the promised land. That to me seems very likely, not just because of the players we have, but also because of the infrastructure and financial set up that the club have in place.

Poll
Could we bounce back into the Premier League?
Yes, the squad we have could do it easily with a few additions.

I am unsure we have the system in place just a case of can we do it.

No, once we are out that will be it for Wigan and the Premier League.

Weekly Poll: Would Relegation be the Worst Thing?

Last years final day ecstasy of staying in the Premier League. But what would have happened had we failed?

Now I have no intention of saying we will go down. In my mind, we are likely to make it due to how we are playing and the last six game run in that we have, means that we could easily get out of the relegation zone to survive in the Premier League for our eighth season.

Yet what if the unthinkable happened? Could we survive in the Championship? Would we be bale to rebuild and bounce straight back up?

Many clubs have fallen by the wayside and dropped right down the league the like of Leeds, Charlton and Sheffield United are just some of the examples of teams which have struggled to get back into the promised land. While the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Norwich have managed to bounce back and get into the Premier League.

An interesting question and one I wish to ask you. Could we make it back?

March Player of the Month

Moses has scored two goals in March, plus got the penalty to lead the charge at Annfield.

Well what a month hey. It looked like it would be all over for Wigan as we entered the month. Lingering bottom of the table, and then getting beaten by Swansea 2-0 looked like it was about to nail the coffin into, what was looking like a daunting end to the season.

But alas three weeks later we are second bottom but level on point with QPR who sit on 17th, and only one point behind 16th place Bolton. So everything is to play for as we march on (my little joke).

So who made the difference (now if you can't answer this one then I am sorry where have you been). But in the interest of fairness I will still pick five players to choose from.
