Match Report

Wigan Athletic 3-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Emmerson Boyce of Wigan Athletic is congratulated by his team-mates after scoring his side's third goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers at DW Stadium.

Well its been a long long season, and it came down to two teams playing each other for no more than pride. And that was what we saw today, on the pitch that was. Now right from the off I would like to condone what happened today. If you haven't already seen the pictures, the fans burst onto the pitch at the end of the game, and it appears there may have been an incident of violence.

I do not at all agree with what happened, the fans that went on the pitch after being told not to; was wrong, very wrong. But what is done is done; I would now rather talk about what was a very good and honest game, and showed why Wolves don’t really deserve to be going down. But the table doesn’t lie after 38 games.

Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Wigan Athletic

Antolin Alcaraz of Wigan Athletic is mobbed by his team mates aftyer scoring the winning goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic at Ewood Park.

Well it was bound to be a long long night, and it really was I can't imagine how long it was for the Blackburn Rovers fans, who now know they will be playing Championship football next season. The pressure was on both sides, and only a win would keep Blackburn up, and a point would have done Latics. And that really set the tone of the game.

It was frustrating and it looked like Wigan had reverted back to the team they had been a few weeks ago, but now looking back on it, you could see that the players were saving themselves for the long night ahead. We were the brighter side and had a large part of the possession for the first half, and that showed with Blackburn having relatively no chances.

Wigan Athletic 4-0 Newcastle United

Franco Di Santo of Wigan Athletic celebrates scoring his team's fourth goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United at the DW Stadium.

I am going to start by first saying, that if you are a Newcastle United fan looking to read about what went wrong, then may I refer you to Coming Home Newcastle. The SB Nation blog designed to handle the matters on all things Newcastle, because I am now going into gloat mode, about how fantastic Wigan were.

So yeah we were brilliant. What made this result even better was the fact that by the end of the game, we weren’t just controlling the game we were humiliating Newcastle (sounds harsh, I know). What I mean to say, is that we just passed and passed and then passed some more, and it looked for all the world that we were the team in fourth and not fourth from bottom.

Fulham 2-1 Wigan Athletic

Emmerson Boyce of Wigan Athletic celebrates scoring his side's first goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Fulham and Wigan Athletic at Craven Cottage.

Well all good things come to an end don't they. But if you are already reading the media it means that Wigan are heading straight down now. Let me clear a couple of points first, we have lost at a team we haven't beaten in over four seasons, while we are still three points ahead of Blackburn. The only thing that really could throw a spanner in the works is QPR beating Tottenham. But I digress we are a Wigan Athletic blog.

So the game today. I wasn't expecting much, and really we didn't get very much as well. The team was the same as that against Arsenal, that meant Jordi Gomez kept his place as Shaun Maloney took to the bench.

View From The Outside - You beat Man U

So you just had the biggest win in your club's history, well to date, in the EPL, and you just made a mess of the top of the league. That should make you all happy. It should also make the rest of the league very happy. But is this the turning point in the race to stay up? After the jump I'll discuss more.

Arsenal 1-2 Wigan Athletic

Jordi Gomez of Wigan celebrates scoring their second goal with Emmerson Boyce of Wigan during the Barclays Premier League match between Arsenal and Wigan Athletic at Emirates Stadium.

Only six days after having played Manchester United, we now faced Arsenal away, yet another venue we had yet to win at. But this time we didn't make any mistakes, like we did against Chelsea and were on the better side of a 2-1 result. Now we have pulled ourselves five points clear of the bottom three, and a major confidence boost towrads survival.

The one absentee which raised eyebrows, was that of Shaun Maloney who was replaced by Jordi Gomez. Wigan fans groaned and it felt like Arsenal already had won the small victory. But that was one decision which actually turned, eventually in our favor.

Wigan Athletic 1(2)-0 Manchester United

Shaun Maloney of Wigan scores to make it 1-0 during the Barclays Premier League match between Wigan Athletic and Manchester United at the DW Stadium.

The day after the night before. To be honest, I am still in a state of up most shock as to just what happened. Wigan Athletic beat Manchester United, by keeping a clean sheet and stopping them from playing anything remotely like football. That in my eyes sums up what I and all 19,000 Wigan fans saw.

It was the combination of months of pain and hurt, and now somehow the lads are playing like world beaters, you have to wondered, why on earth haven't we been playing like this all season?

The passing, the movement and the defensive organisation is something that we have want for the past two seasons, and now we have it, you have to feel that it will be that kind of performance level that will keep us in the Premier League.

Chelsea 2-1 Wigan Athletic

Roberto Martinez, manager of Wigan Athletic gives instructions during the Barclays Premier League match between Chelsea and Wigan Athletic at Stamford Bridge.

Oh football. You are a cruel cruel mistress and like so many a time over the past six months. Wigan failed to get anything from a game where for large portions of it we were the better side, and for 45 minutes it looked like Wigan would go and get something defending well, with our keeper on top form.

But like all things, the team that didn't really need the points got them. One for a contraversial offside decision, and then for an unlucky deflection which allowed Juan Mata to tap in from close range to score in the last minute of injury time and win the game for a Chelsea side which is fighting on three front. And you have to ask how are they still doing it.

They were not like Chelsea sides we have faced before and this was probably our best chance to have gotten a result from Stamford Bridge.
