Victor Anichebe to be the club's first summer signing?
Steven Naismith is one of the many players who is leaving the cold northern country of Scotland for pastures new in England. This follows the collapse of one of Scotland's greatest clubs Rangers. I said a few days ago that he would be worth a look at by the club, and it appears that we have been in contact with the player. That is the good news.
The bad news is that it looks increasingly likely that he has signed for Everton. With reports today suggesting that he has been down for medicals at the club to finalise a deal. Which is a bit of a shame since I thought he could make a could signing for Wigan. Yet the chance to link up with his old Ranger's strike partner (Nikita Jelavic) was just too good an oportunity.
Yet as they say when one door closes another door opens, and that is what it could signal for one current Everton player.
Victor Anichebe has been linked with Wigan for the past season, and Roberto Martinez is a known admirer of the Nigerian International. The player has yet to really sparkle into life since bursting on the scene with Everton in 2006. Yet the 24 year-old striker is still learning his trade and could prove to be a useful addition to the team.
Having played a 104 times for Everton he has a wealth of experience yet has only managed to score 12 goals. But what he gives you, is the big man up front for everyone else to play off. Strong, fast and good in the air he has all the attributes to play as the lone striker that we utilize in our formation.
The key question is, can he score? Only time would tell whether regular football would see him burst into life, yet with a fee of around about £3 million we wouldn't really be pushing the boat out, for a player who could add a real edge to our decreasing strike power.
