Does this shot get your goal of the season?
Ah goals, those things that win football matches and where all of the ball must cross the line. Alas we have not seen many goals this season (that is in Wigan actually scoring them), although towards the end of the season we did get significantly better at finding the target.
So with little number of goals to choose from, it is a case of what really was the best goal scored by Latics this season? When I started to ponder this question I looked back and wondered before February, did we actually score any good goals? There were a couple and one of those goals makes it onto my top five.
But which one gets your vote?
We needed points and the players knew that, and during this little burst of good performances points started to come as well. And Victor Moses would lead the charge with an excellent performances against West Brom where he opened the scoring for Wigan with a cracker.
Coming in from the left hand side. Moses let go and curled the ball high into Ben Fosters right hand corner. No chance for the keeper, and it was the kind of goal we had been looking for Moses to start scoring.
Hugo Rodallega vs QPR 21st January
Losing the game and it looked like all hope lost we sent on Rodallega to try and get us a goal back. And the Colombian striker did just that with a cracker of a goal to put Wigan back in the game on 66 minutes. This will likely be his last goal for the club, but wasn't it a strike.
Free kick 30 yards out and in the back of the net whistling past a Paddy Kenny with no chances. We are going to miss Hugo's goals when he goes.
At the time the 0-0 score line was a huge injustice and we were dominating what was a poor United side. You could feel the players wanting the goals to happen and we the fans were urging them on towards the goal, that really we had already score in the first half.
The one we got instead was even better. First a corner given that never was, allowed Shaun Maloney to do a quick one-two with Jean Beasejour and get past a slow Phil Jones. This opened the angle up and allowed Maloney to let rip and bulge the side of the United net.
Franco Di Santo vs Newcastle United 28th April
The only goal the big guy scored that wasn't a tap in or a deflected shot this year. But what a goal it was. Place to pinpoint precision to sum up what was a perfect first half for Latics. After having tried his luck a few times before hand Fanco hadn't really gotten close to scoring.
Then in injury time of the first half, it was a case of I will have ago of Franco who curved a beautiful strike over the surprised Tim Krul into the keepers far corner completly unaware of what was going on. Complete audacity in the shot and brilliant confidence to score it.
There have been two great goals by Boyce this season. This one for me just edged itself over the one against Fulham. That was more due to the brillaint play that also led up to the goal. It started from our own half with our defence in control of the ball. Maynor Figueroa was allowed to have free control of it and picked out the freshly on Hugo Rodallega.
The Colombian striker got his head on the ball to cushion it down. Boyce simply strode onto the ball and let rip hitting the ball brillaintly into the top corner of the keepers nearside post. Everything leading up to and including the goal was pure brilliance.
Great ball by Figs, great cushioning header and a great volley to finish it off.
